JAMAICAN INDEPENDENCE
Aug 03, 2010

Why we should all be celebrating!
Whether you were born in the beautiful island of Jamaica or not, we have all been influenced by its rich culture and diversity. Jamaican Independence takes place on Friday the 6th August and below are some of the reasons why we should all be rocking black, green and gold on this day:
PEOPLE
Jamaican people are known for their laid back attitude and boisterous personalities, but in truth they are a proud nation who are full of zest, energy and enthusiasm. Although a relatively small island Jamaican people have influenced the world across many fields, and will continue to make leaps and bounds.
CULTURE & HISTORY
The culture and heritage of Jamaica is rich, strong and proud. The Jamaican flag is probably the most accurate representation of this: “The sun shineth, the land is green and the people are strong and creative.” The flag is made up of three colours; black, green and gold which all have their own unique meanings. Black represents strength, hardship and creativity, green represents hope and agriculture and gold depicts wealth and sunlight.
THE ISLAND
Jamaica is a beautiful tropical island with sandy beaches, blue skies, warm weather and scenic views. It is one of the worlds top tourists destinations and is the perfect place to get way for a beach and cultural holiday. Popular tourist attractions include Dunns' River, The Bob Marley Museum and music festivals such as the Sunfest which takes place every year.
MUSIC
One of the greatest exports out of Jamaica has to be its music. From Ska, to Rocksteady to Reggae and Bahsment; music is an integral part of the Jamaican culture. Full of passion, raw energy and love, the music of this island has transcended through decades and is now enjoyed in every continent across the globe. Well known musical artists include the legendary Bob Marley, Shaggy, Buju Banton and Movado.
SPORT
Who would have ever imagined a Jamaican Bobsleigh team could compete in the winter Olympic games or that the fastest runner in the world could come out of Jamaica?
In 1988 Jamaica took part in the Bobsleigh tournament in Canada, and the teams efforts inspired the popular movie 'Cool Runnings'. In 1930 Jamaica entered its first athletics team into an international tournament and since then the world have been astonished by the teams achievements. Most prominent is Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world, who holds the world record for the 100m and 200m sprints.
FOOD
From its national dish of Ackee and Saltfish, to favourites such as Jerk Chicken and Rice and Peas; Jamaican food is full of flavour, variety and richness. Recipes have been inspired from the many people that call Jamaica home to the various crops and ingredients that are grown there.
From gaining independence in 1962, until the present day; the people of Jamaica have come a long way and have achieved a great deal to be proud of.
Its culture has strongly influenced the British culture and in many aspects the two have merged. That is why the 6th of August is for everyone. Remember the Jamaican moto: 'Out of many, one people'
