FROM OWNING A MUSIC COLLECTION TO OWNING A RADIO STATION
Jun 07, 2010

Pulse met with DJ Hypez who talks about his encounters of being a DJ and why he believes his radio station is destined for big things
Ever since DJ Hypez can remember, music has always played a big part in his life, he has now taken his love of music and developed it into a career. Beginning as a garage DJ when he was a teenager, the 22 year old from East London now not only plays music, but organises his own events, and has even launched his own internet radio station: www.urbaneliteradio.com, which DJ Hypez says is his biggest achievement thus far. The station was a dream that DJ Hypez carried for six years, and two months ago, he finally saw this dream turn into a reality.
DJ Hypez believes that his station stands out from its competitors as it presents as a professional sounding station but still retains its underground sounding edge. The station also boosts of having a HD Web Cam, and iPhone and Blackberry users can soon tune in via their mobile phone. In the future DJ Hypez plans to expand the station by making it DAB.
Often seen as a glamorous industry, DJing has become a popular career choice by many who recognise music as being one of their greatest loves, but surely there's more to being a DJ than having a large music collection. Pulse asked DJ Hypez what it takes to be a real DJ. He tells us that a real DJ is someone that puts the work in, and is committed to Djing: “Without hard work you're not going to get anywhere” And adds: “You have to stand out.” DJ Hypez is also a member of the popular crew known as K.I.G, whose hits include 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes' and Rollin.' Being part of this crew further solidifies his standing within the industry. As a member of the crew his main role is to DJ at events and performances. DJ Hypez specialises in RnB, hip hop, reggae and bashment.
DJ Hypez admits that although there are a few DJs and promoters that are supportive, the majority are ruthless and he re-encounters a moment where he was a victim to this competitive nature: A DJ who I paid to play at my event, told ravers who were waiting to go in, that it was rubbish. I didn't realise that he was also having an event the same night.” Although he is all to aware of this kind of attitude DJ Hypez is determined to remain successful, and stay focused as he is passionate about what he does: “A lot of people are just in it for the money, but I'm in it for the love of music.”
His events are always different and often include the use of a swimming pool or jacuzzi and a host of well established DJs playing a variety of music.
Although it was DJing that got the ball rolling for DJ Hypez career his future is destined for bigger things: “I see myself doing concerts in the future, and I also see my radio station being number one.
Currently DJ Hypez is planning the stations launch party that takes place at the end of July.
