Pulse caught up with Napper and Marvin...
Neither a promoter or an event organiser, Napper and Marvin agree that their joint passion for light entertainment and hard work is the reason for the success of The Sunday Show. The weekly event which has been running for just over two years is a variety show which consists of comedians, poetry and live PAs and is hosted by Mo The Comedian. It is an event where established and up and coming acts can rub shoulders together in their bid to entertain the audience. In the last two years The Sunday Show has included a vast arrange of acts including: Eddie Kadi, Blackstreet, Ghetts, Richard Blackwood, Slim and Tinchy Stryder. Marvin told Pulse: “We provide good acts, a good platform and a fun place to go on a Sunday.”
Napper and Marvin believe that The Sunday Show works because it combines a variety of acts, games and entertainment. For them, The Sunday Show is purely for fun. Napper adds that their partnership works because they know each others strengths and weaknesses: “It's ying and yang – we know our roles and we stick to them.” Their winning formula is a combination of hard work and passion, and they are encouraged by the love, support and advice that they receive from their supporters.
Although acts such as Blackstreet helped to build the reputation of The Sunday Show, Marvin admits that staging high value acts is a risk; but continue to take this chance as they are confident that their audience will appreciate such star quality: “With most of the shows, we don't even make a profit, and Marvin later adds: “We just go out and put on the best show possible.”
Although other shows are also benefiting form the popularity of live entertainment, stage shows and stand up comedians; the pair do not see these similar shows as a threat. Napper told Pulse: “In my opinion this is the number one entertainment show in London.” And added: “The numbers we get in the house every week, proves my point.” Marvin also added that: “Anything going on in the underground and in London is not really in our conciousness.” The pair say that their inspiration comes from popular family entertainment shows such as 'Jonathan Ross' and 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks'.
With two successful years already under their belt, The Sunday Show continues to be going from strength to strength. Marvin says that he is pleased with the success so far, and that he is looking forward to bigger and better things : “I'm delighted, and I'm excited for the future.” Marvin and Napper are currently planing their Super Sunday Show which will be taking place sometime in the next few months. Although the line up is still top secret, the pair promise to give their audience a show to remember with mainstream acts and TV comedians. For the future, Marvin and Napper would like to see The Sunday Show taking place at the O2 Arena and be televised for to a mass audience .
Marvin says that what he is doing now is a passion, and that his success is down to having a goal, working hard and keeping determined: “Its a lot of hard work, but we enjoy it.”
Both Napper and Marvin believe in taking the rough with the smooth and their advice to any budding event organiser is to get a mentor in to help.
